What is the difference between sleep and hibernate? Should you use sleep or hibernate? In this video, I have discussed sleep vs hibernate and how can you enable Hibernate options on Windows 10. SLEEP MODE - When you put your computer to sleep it saves all your open files and documents into RAM memory. since RAM is a volatile memory it should always be running to keep your files to the state where you left. So when you put your pc to sleep all other components like CPU, Hard disk & GPU shut down but RAM keeps running and uses some power even in sleep mode. HIBERNATE MODE- Now, Hibernate does the same thing but it creates a hibernation file of all the open files and documents and saves it into the hard disk and then shutdowns every component and it takes no power at all. So hibernate does not consume power at all. What you should be using? Hibernate OR Sleep? If you are taking a little break like a lunch or coffee break then you can put your pc to sleep and whenever you press the power button or open the lid of your laptop it instantly turns ON and you can resume your work. But if you are leaving your PC for a long time maybe overnight then you can hibernate it to save the power or the battery of your laptop. When you resume your PC after hibernation it takes a little more time to resume the open files since it has to access the hard disk and read data from the hibernation file. It takes around a few seconds to open the exact same screen where you left. So if you are looking to save power then you should be using hibernate rather than sleep mode.
